Canyons vary greatly in their depth, width, and composition, and for this reason canyoneering can entail much more than a casual walk between canyon walls. Many canyons require specialized gear and techniques to traverse them successfully and safely—this is known as technical canyoneering. Technical canyoneering necessitates the use of much the same gear (ropes, harnesses, webbing, etc.) and techniques (chimneying, stemming, rappelling, etc.) employed by cavers and climbers, making it a hybrid sport.
